Updated: Oct 26, 2020

Legacy of One-Room Schools is a 142-page hardback, photo-illustrated book (8 ½ by 11 inches) about 19th century and early twentieth century American education. The Federal Land Act of 1785 established a master plan to survey land for settlement in the Northwest Territory states. The book’s text describes early school districts in Ohio, a pattern repeated in the rest of the Northwest Territory. Photographs include examples of schools from all six states. The narrative also tells how teachers were recruited, lessons taught, classrooms furnished, and what changes occurred after consolidation.

A Teacher’s Guide of suggested activities to use with students during an old-fashioned school day is included at the end of the book. The book’s author is a retired elementary teacher with experience in re-enactments. Cost of the book is $15 which includes shipping. Please send your book order with your address and a check to Myrna Grove, 526 Cardinal Drive, Bryan, OH 43506.
