2.  Suitable salary

3.  Proper lighting

4.  School grounds of at least 1/2 acre

5.  Schoolhouse in good repair

6.  Well or sanitary drinking fountain

7.  Hardwood floors

8.  Heating and ventilating system

9.  Library of 80 volumes

10.  Seats and desks suitable for all ages

11.  Good blackboards with some for small children

12.  A dictionary, flag, maps, charts, glove, organ, and pictures

*Almost every school had a picture of George Washington & Abraham Lincoln. Some schools also had pictures of other significant Generals

In 1924 the school was replaced by a 25 ft x 40 ft brick building at the corner of Ives and Barnes Rds. The old frame school was sold for $130 and moved to a local farm where it was a tool shed until torn-down. By 1927 Hubbard was a Standard School. In 1964 Hubbard annexed to Mason. In 1967 the brick school was converted into a beautiful residence. CRORES p. 98

Fractional with Meridian, Lansing and Alaiedon. In 1936 the WPA reported a frame structure 24 ft x 34 ft and 16 ft tall. There was also a 5 ft x 16 ft storm entrance. Had heating and electric lights. In 1964 the pupils were divided among Holt, Mason, East Lansing and Lansing Schools. After annexations completed by 1964 the schoolhouse was torn-down. Michigan State University Locke Grange #1525 p. 69. Locke had the most pupils of any of the rural schools. The WPA project recorded a building 36 ft x 29 ft, wood-frame with electric lights and wood/coal stove. In 1956 Locke Center consolidated with Webberville. The building deteriorated and was razed. Thought to be the first school in Township opening in 1859. Consolidated with Stockbridge in 1952. Closed in 1956. Stockbridge sold the site in 1957. Fractional with Windsor, Eaton County. At a 1960 meeting voted to annex to Holt schools. Residents in the S half of Maple Grove district did annex to Holt and residents in the remaining half of Maple Grove annexed to Lansing. The school served as an Elementary School For Lansing until closing in 2005. School was sold and changed hands many times. Currently stands shuttered and dilapidated. ICORS p. 212

Michigan State University Okemos Grand #235 p. 69. The 1880 school was a two-story structure, 30 ft x 50 ft and housed 8 grades. That building was used until 1949. Okemos School was established in 1923. A fire in 1955 burned the 1873 building and in 1956 the old schoolhouse was torn-down. CRORES p. 258

The Whitney's donated land on the Grand River for Onondaga #1 called Riverside. In 1933 it was acknowledged as a Standard School. It had 2 or 3 classrooms. In 1958 it annexed to Leslie but continued to be used for elementary children from Onondaga possibly into the early 1970's. It is now a brick residence. CRORES p. 76 Michigan Shadow Towns says the large brick schoolhouse was built in 1903 and is now a residence. It closed in 1972 and the students go to Leslie. Onondaga had consolidated with Leslie in the 1960's

Fractional with Delhi Pleasant Grove and was a Standard School in 1915. Malcolm X enrolled in Kindergarten at this school. The WPA describes the school as 2 1/2 acres in S/29. It merged with Lansing City in 1958. In 1994 the Lansing School Board sold the Pleasant Grove Elementary School to the Capital City Masonic Association for $250,000. CRORES p. 232

In 1886 it was a 864 sq ft wood-frame school. In 1936 the WPA says the school had two urinals and two toilets. Also a 8 ft x 14 ft shed. Before 1941 the school closed and pupils were transported to Williamston. The building stood vacant for several years. In 1941 the school and all contents were offered for sale to the highest bidder. It was sold and in the process of being moved when a big gust of wind blew it over. The owners gathered the boards and built a fine house that stands today. CRORES p. 190

The WPA in 1936 recorded this school was on a two acre parcel. In 1940 an addition and other improvements, made the schoolhouse double in size of the original building. Five school districts consolidated with Lansing in 1957 including Stoner School. The citizens at a vote were opposed to annexation with Lansing. Instead in 1960 they consolidated with Gretton Woods, Windmere View and Windemere Park. Eventually they joined the Waverly district. Waverly's Stoner School was for sale in 1972. CRORES p. 243

The WPA gave a date of 1891 for the building of this school. In 1936 They stated it was 806 sq ft, framed-school in S/12. No plumbing, heat from a stove, electric lights and well water. Also a 14 ft x 8 ft wood shed, and the one acre site was fenced. In 1955 it was annexed to Leslie. Children who lived in the annexed districts of Childs, Weeks, Morse or Sunnyside continued to attend the rural schools. Building sold in 1956. CRORES p. 82

Walters School was designated a Standard School. The old schoolhouse was moved and converted into a residence that was demolished to make way for US-127. Michigan State University Williamston Grange #115 p. 70. The Township of Philipstown (now Williamstown) had a name change in 1839. In 1844 a school was built in a small building in the village. It was logs sawn into boards. It was 12 ft x 14 ft and 8ft high. It was subsequently sold. By 1875 a fine brick building was erected at what in 1971 was the site of the Junior HS. Five rural schools in Ingham County, including Wolcott, did annex to Eaton Rapids. The empty school site reverted back to the heirs of the land donor. The very first school taught by Dr. Lincoln in his office. He was the pioneer physician of the county. Dr. W. B. Lincoln built the first frame house in Ionia (City) in 1834. His was also the first wedding on July 5, 1835. In autumn of 1835 was the first public school. In 1836 taught the summer in Ionia. Schoolhouse #1. Baptist Church met there in 1837. Methodist also met in Village schoolhouse around 1840ish. In 1880 there was a H.S. in Ionia and 3 Ward Schools (4 wards in Ionia) School #1 on Main St, W of Dexter in 1837. In 1843 voted to build a new schoolhouse, but argued over location so it wasn't until 1848 that a site was chosen. A One-story school burned-down soon after it was finished. Another school was built on the same site. In 1855 the tax was 99 cents per child on 211 children. In 1864 another school was built and in 1875 a school in West Ward was built. Ionia Internet
