Originally called The Tonedagana School. Also Mulholland School after a nearby family of that name. The entire county was eventually renamed Emmet County. There were earlier schools than Ayr. Brutus School & Maple River #1 started in 1879 and Sunny Ridge was formed in 1880. Sunny Ridge was Maple River #2. In the early 1880's Alanson and the Oden area had Maple River Township districts #3 and #4 (1881 and 1882) The #5 Red School started in 1883. Ayr and North Ayr started in 1883. The original school site is where the school stands today. In February they purchased the 2 acres of school property for $10. In 1901 students in Sunny Ridge transferred to Ayr. In 1905 it was decided to build a wooden-frame school. It was a large school. The Great Depression caused cut backs. Mothers were asked to clean the school with no pay is one example. Until 1930 only 3 students had gone onto H.S. at Alanson. The WPA helped the school. They dug a well & put in a new fence. There were a lot of upgrades. The 1939 census had 32 students. School named in newspaper 15 Sept 1949. School closed in 1955 and consolidated with Pellston district. Used as Township Hall. In 2006 Ayr existed as a residence. In 2017 used for community uses
