New Buffalo #1
1836
Old Time Schools Internet indicates this 1836 was first school in New Buffalo, established in 1836
Mention of school. Burned down (probably made of logs) and in 1923 a new two-story building on Buffalo St was built to replace the building that burned in 1915. Total income and outgoing was over $12,000 with teacher's salaries accounting for more than half. Quite an increase over the $150 voted for school. It is thought that in 1915 the City Hall (that had originally been a school) which was destroyed by fire in 1915) was built, but the photo of the two-story multi room building dates the photo at 1908. The graduated number for 1908 was 25. In 1920 the graduating class was 4. In 1914 the 7th and 8 grades had a number of 16 in their photo outside in front of a wooden-frame school

Whatever building there was used for a school starting about 1851. It burned down about 1866. In 1867, the Dill Boys built the existing Stickney School building. In 1859, there were 23 students at Stickney for a 7.5 month school year. In 1924, Stickney educated students from the beginners grade through 8th grade, but after that in 1925 the 7th and 8th graders attended Watervliet City School. Sometime in the 1930's the 5th and 6th graders also started attending the City School. The last year Stickney housed pupils was the 1939-40 school year when 28 were enrolled. It then closed as a school, but was used as a community center with a variety of events. In 1955, the Church of Christ became owners of the Stickney School.
