Kingston #4f | Koylton | Tuscola | 1866-HS 1895-1957 | Eastern village limits on Koylton/Kingston Township line in Koylton Township on small rise | 5 | Log/W/B | In 1866 the children of Kingston (Named that after 1871) first attended school in a log schoolhouse located near the eastern village limits on Koylton/Kingston Township line in Koylton Township. In 1866 was called District No. 4 Koylton. In 1869 it became #4f. In 1873, a frame school was built on the same site. In 1880, an addition to the school lasted 20 years. In 1902, a four-room two-story brick school was constructed on this site of the 1873 frame school. The school was later altered to serve as the H.S. (First accredited 12th grade the Class of 1912) (p.44) (Present day site of Kingston Elementary School) By 1894 they were accredited to the 10th grade. (p. 27) They All Became One pages 7, 8, & 28. In 1929/30 a bond issue passed and a cafeteria, a gym, restrooms, an auditorium with stage and outside bleachers were added to the school (p. 76) By 1946 there were 12 classrooms. Also UM accredited. p. 136. In 1972 additions were made to the school and the original 4 classrooms were demolished. (p. 217) |

At some date the school was re-built in brick. The school's name was changed to Clinesmith (There were 8 Clinesmith boys) Because the Clinesmith name was so long it was shortened to Smith. The last year of school was 1965-1966 with fewer than 20 students. In the late 1960's the Township was divided in half and those students went to Kingston or Mayville depending on where they lived. North Grove (28) #6f | Fremont | Tuscola | 1872-1965 | Located on the corner of N Grove Rd & M-24 | 10 | B | North Grove School was originally made of logs and it was built on the site of a previous church. But it burned-down in 1881. A brick building, a very nice looking building with possibly two-rooms, a large front door, entrance area, belfry and a basement replaced the log school and it was now in S/10. It was fractional and took in students from the Barton District. Possibly due to overcrowding in 1957, the 7th and 8th graders were bussed to Mayville Schools. In 1965 the entire district consolidated to Mayville. What happened to the school after it closed was not stated in Country Schools of Mayville p. 120 |
