Atkins (18) #6 | Clyde | St. Clair | late 1800's- | Unknown? | School possibly named after pioneers, some of the first in Clyde who lived there a long time and well known. Memoirs of St. Clair p. 240. The community of Atkins in Clyde Township, St. Clair County, Michigan, was named after the Rev. Allen Atkins, a pioneer settler and Methodist minister in the area. Established in the late 19th century, Atkins featured a railroad depot, a general store-post office, and a one-room schoolhouse. The school served the local community, providing education to children in the surrounding rural areas. Over time, as transportation improved and populations shifted, many such rural schools were consolidated into larger districts, leading to the closure of smaller institutions like the Atkins School. Today, little remains of the original settlement, and the schoolhouse no longer stands | ||
