During the depression and, into the 1940's McMillian held its own for one reason because it had the biggest and best school in the area. This new two-story brick school was built in 1912 and was named after President Lincoln. There were 115 students in 1932. That year it became the area's K-12 school when a major addition was built enabling it to continue serving Columbus and adjacent Townships for the next 35 years. The High School partition of Lincoln closed in 1940 and gradually the district students have shifted to the Tahquamenon School District system in Newberry. Michigan Shadow Towns p. 210
