Adrian First School Union | Adrian | Lenawee | 1848/49 | The first school in the Village of Logan (now Adrian) was in the only frame house. It was privately conducted. Let to 4 districts that combined into Adrien Union School District Number One. The new building situated between Church & Mamee St began July 8, 1852. The first graduation class was 1857 with 3 graduated. Between 1857-1861, 4 new branch schools were erected. The Union School building burned to the ground on the morning of August 10, 1866. It was replaced by a new Central building in 1869. It was to have 20 rooms and accommodate 1,000 students. The Original Adrian Union School building was sold and razed to the ground in 1927. Overcrowding continued to be of concern every year. There was much discussion of a new High School. But first another branch school, Jefferson, was constructed in 1907. In 1906 the board bought land next to Central School for a new High School. The new school was dedicated in November of 1908. The library report shows nearly 20,000 volumes. In 1911 the Junior High was separated from the High School. The branch schools were renamed in 1919. East became McKinley. North was now Washington, South became Garfield and West was Lincoln. Enrollment continues to grow and more branch schools were built. Salaries went up (Women to $800 and men to $1200) Many different sports were added, new courses offered such as business classes with typewriters although the classics such as Latin and Greek were still taught. Adrian seemed to have an excellent education system for its students, faculty, and citizens | |||
