In 1879 Wayland became a grade school and a brick school was built. This building burned in 1896. Fortunately a new two-story brick school with a basement was built to replace it. It is steam heated, well lighted, ventilated and furnished. It goes to 12th grade and is now on the approved list of Normal Schools. History of Allegan County p. 531
