Sault Ste. Marie High School Spruce & Johnston Sts

Marshall N. Hunt erected the old Washington School and later built the old Lincoln School, the Park School and Jefferson School as well as the High School at Spruce and Johnston St. By 2003 when the City of the Rapids published the Washington, Lincoln, Park Schools and Sault H.S. were gone. The H.S. building was built between 1915 and 1917, and opened as one of the very best in the state. A fire devastated the H.S. in May, 1920. Hunt rebuilt the school in 10 months. The first class to graduate was in 1917 and the last was in 1969. A new H.S. was built and the old H.S. became the Jr. High which was used until 1979. Then the building was torn-down. Replaced Mackinaw City's original 1871 log cabin school. This frame school was built in 1885 and was located in the town of Freedom near Mill Creek Park on what is now US-23 SE of Mackinaw City. Closed sometimes in the 1930's. Was sold in 1949. The Historical Society discovered the dilapidated school building in the the woods with a rotten floor. The owners deeded it to the Historical Society that is trying to save this schoolhouse. Internet
