A first Pierson School was erected in 1859. A second frame schoolhouse was built in 1900 and remodeled in 1915-16. Usually there were less than 10 students and in 1908-09 there were no students enrolled. The district closed prior to 1951 and annexed to Laingsburg School District. The archives of the Clinton County Historical Society have the records for this school. Clinton Co. p. 212

Originally in a log schoolhouse. A brick building was built 1/2 mile to the W and replaced the log building. The first teacher was Frankie Laughlin. This district was one of the last rural districts in the county to remain in operation. After land was purchased on the N edge of Pigeon, a 6 room brick school was built in 1894. The two wooden-frame schools were then sold and moved to Pigeon. One became Mr. Maier's store and the other was used as a stable at the Blacksmith Shop. 4 students who had completed the 10th grade graduated in 1899. Students from Caseville transferred to Pigeon for their Jr and Sr years. On November 18, 1916 the 1894 brick High School burned-down. The building was beyond repair. Pigeon p. 323

See Brown School. Pike #4 in Olive Township had a lot of different school buildings. It's been reported that a school in this area started as early as 1840 and was called the Pike School. In 1865 a building was on the SE corner of Chadwick and DeWitt Rd. It was painted Brown so it was called Brown school. A 1900 graduation program refers to this as the Dill's School. During these years there was a log school, frame school, and then a brick house now stands there. Then another log school was built but that school burned. Then Smith and Pike combined into a new school. Originally students who wished to go beyond the 8th grade attended DeWitt but when the district decided to annex in 1961 it chose St. Johns. The property revered back to the original owner. it was sold and used as a church. Dewitt District Library holds the records of this district. Clinton Co p. 161

Two teachers were hired. A music teacher visited the school. On the last day of school each year was a picnic. It is possible that Pine Grove became a Standard School. Rudiments of book learning were hard to come by in the early days before West Bloomfield became a Township. A log cabin between Pine and Walnut Lakes Rds served as the first, and for a long time, the only school in the area. Instruction is believed to have begun there as early as 1828. The original location might not be too far from the little frame schoolhouse which now occupies the SW corner of Long Lake & Middlebelt Rds. The next one, also built of logs was erected in the Scotch Settlement between Orchard & Green Lakes. The recent Scotch School built in 1826 is the oldest in the West Bloomfield school district and the third school to service the community's needs was started at Walnut Lake. It was succeeded by a frame structure built around 1885 which is now known to local residents as the Snack Shop

All 4 of these schools were put up for auction on August 28, 1956. H.S. students went to Big Rapids

Original school, Shanty near Maybee & Sashabaw Rds

In 1834, served as a classroom near Maybee & Sashabaw Rds. In 1837 the Pingry School was built near Territorial Rd now called the Dixie Hwy. In 1840 in District #5 it was necessary to raise a tax of $90 to build the Hunter School. Not only that, but the board decided to pay themselves 3 shillings and each child was charged 2 cents for each day they attended. The parents met this bill by paying as little as 25 cents down. In Independence Township sometimes the Indians would stand outside a school window & watch as the youngsters got an education. No one thought of educating the Indian children

Pioneer School was later called the Moored School named for an early settler, E. Moored. It was in operation by 1882. It was originally a log building 7 logs high, 16 ft x 24 ft with a shake roof. It was furnished with benches, tables, slates, a blackboard, Webster's unabridged dictionary, Yaggs anatomical charts and a round oak stove. Cost of this first building and furnishings was $400. In 1889 a frame building replaced the log school. The school had many books not commonly found in all schools. It was voted to close in 1961. The building was used for church services in the 1950's and 1960's and is now a residence. School Days. p. 34

A home school, then a log school was probably the beginning of Pittsburg #4. Pittsburgh was named after early settler John Pitts. After the log school, a frame school was built. That was followed by a beautiful brick building. The old school was purchased by the Methodist Church. It was moved and used for a buggy shed. In 1887 a beautiful brick building was built. The school moved S of original site and consolidated with Perry Schools. The school was then sold and is now a residence. Echoes of Yesteryears v. 5 p. 25

School #4 Plainfield was built as the population grew on the eastern side of the Township. By 1859 the 4 school districts in Saginaw Township were Brick, White, Black and Plainfield. Each operated independently. Each school hired their own teacher. In 1878 little Plainfield School on Bay Rd was relocated to the NE corner of Bay & Shattuck Rds. The school was expanded to a new two-room classroom building in 1938. Then by 1957 increased enrollment at Plainfield made it necessary to build a 6 room schoolhouse farther E on Shattuck Rd. In 1886 it was a 864 sq ft wood-frame school. In 1936 the WPA says the school had two urinals and two toilets. Also a 8 ft x 14 ft shed. Before 1941 the school closed and pupils were transported to Williamston. The building stood vacant for several years. In 1941 the school and all contents were offered for sale to the highest bidder. It was sold and in the process of being moved when a big gust of wind blew it over. The owners gathered the boards and built a fine house that stands today. CRORES p. 190

By 1910 This school Labeled as Shanty on map but shows as a church. In 1917, a one-room brick school was built in Pontiac. Apparently this school was Pontiac #11(Twp section #11) Newspapers in early 1920 refer to building as the Joselyn School. In 1925, a two-story, four-classroom brick addition was added to the 1917 school. The newspaper says this addition will replace the Old building previously known at the Shuttuck School and the new school will be named Malkim School. Malkin stood until 1982 and the 1917/1925 buildings were demolished in 1990 to make way for a McDonalds. Pontiac newspaper 1990

Porter School had been the heart of the Village of Alpha since it was opened in 1915. The school has been vacant since 1971. The two-story brick K-10 school is quite large and once provided room for Sunday School church services, a doctor's office, library, and community events. In 1925 it enrolled 421 students, some from surrounding Townships. By 1964 enrollment had dropped to 174 students and in 1971 the school had to close. Today there are fewer than 30 children in the village and all go to the consolidated school in Crystal Falls. The Township uses the gymnasium for offices and meetings, but the rest of the building continues to deteriorate. It must be sold and restored or torn-down soon. Michigan Shadow Towns p. 202
