Before the Koylton Center School was established the children attended the White Creek School. In 1898 plans were drawn up for a school and this became school district #5. In 1901 it was called Koylton Center. In later years the name was changed to the McKenzie School. The last session ended in spring 1938. They consolidated with the Kingston School in the 1940's. In 1951 it was decided to sell the old school district schools that had combined with Kingston. p. 163. The building is still standing and used as a cabin. They All Became One p. 289

However after the assassinatiion of President McKinley in 1901 the name was changed to McKinley. 1 1/2-story brick two-room schoolhouse on a stone foundation. Has two double doors. A 40 ft tall tower once held the school bell. Two-rooms, both 27 ft x 33 ft. A small kitchenette at the rear and the building has bathrooms and a coat room. Served students onE side of Vassar. In 1972 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. After 1964 building was used as storage by the school district until 1971 and then it was sold. It was also used as a dance school. McKinley was named after property owners. School inspectors from Grant, Sheridan and Vernon Townships, along with the city of Clare discussed a new district two miles W of Clare to be known as McKinley and named District #7 of Grant Township. McKinley was repainted in 1905. It was reshingled in 1927. A new flag pole went up in 1931. In 1953 Clare City Schools bought a new 60 passenger school bus to pick up students at O'Connor, Phinisey and McKinley to bring them into Clare. In 1962 McKinley was put up for auction. The first Mears Schoolhouse has been torn-down, as has the 2nd Mears School. Planes charged in Montgomery One school sundown but at the location of the 2nd school is the Golden Township Offices and Community Center. Around 1960 the children started going to Hart Public School which also operated the village's Golden Elementary School. The Mears School (1907) was torn-down after it closed in 1967. Michigan State University Mendon Grange #1513 p. 120. By 1875 Mendon had a K-12 school. Then the school and several businesses burned-down as well as the two largest hotels. Then in 1916 a huge fire destroyed the entire 41 buildings in the business district plus nearly homes, farms and barns. It was said that Meredith was the finest school building in the county. It was a three-story brick building 30 ft x 50 ft costing $4,000. It is possible that such a school in the Meredith Village was not really a good idea. In 1885 construction was halted. It is never stated whether or not the school is completed. In 1893 the RR tracks leading into Meredith are pulled and with rail traffic gone the town dwindles and becomes a ghost town. By 1916 the school is not even on maps and the few remaining children attend the newly built Wyckoff School 2.5 miles S of Meredith. The school was the last remaining structure in Meredith and parts such as the chimney blocks were taken for use on homes. Clare County School Houses p. 48. List of teachers on p. 52. Basswood logs were used for the first Meridan school built in 1839. The school served parts of Victor, Ovid and Shiawassee Counties. The Methodist used the school for church services as late as 1861. The school was replaced in 1868 by a 21 ft x 29 ft Meridian School which was then fractional with Sciota and Victor townships. The district was annexed by Ovid in 1963 and was burned by vandals in 1969. Clinton Co. p. 176

In 1841 the log Merrihew School had 24 students enrolled with average attendance of 18 during the five month term. The teacher was paid $13.00. Later a frame building was erected. From 1837-38 Milford #4f served N and S side of the village. After that date and across the Huron was made District #5. In 1851-52 a brick school was built on Detroit St. It was a two-story building and an addition was added in 1867. In Jan. 1883 the school burned-down. A 2nd two-story brick building was built by 1883. The first building designed solely for H.S. was built beside the 1883 school and opened for classes in the fall of 1926. It was known as the Milford Rural Agricultural School and was needed to provide a H.S. curriculum and relieve overcrowding from consolidations in the 1920's of the rural schools. Hockey and basketball were added to the H.S. The Elementary was also in this building and most teachers now had only 2 grades to teach in 1 classroom. Kindergarten was added in 1914. One of five "grammar" Schools in Glen Arbor: Glen Arbor, Glen Haven, Port Oneida, Miller Hill and South Manitou Island. By 1939 all were consolidated with Glen Arbor Schools. The Glen Lake Schools sold the small plot of land in Dec 2017. The new owners did extensive clean up of the land and found the well, steps & part of the foundation. In 1911 a big forest fire hit the Millersburg area. High walls of fire, fed by strong winds destroying the business section, the schoolhouse, two mills and 26 box cards.
