Christian Baker donated the land for the first school which was known as the Baker School. After Baker's nephew, Jesse Baker, died of diphtheria at the age of 4 the school was renamed Jesse School, District #11. The wooden-frame school was on Parks and Shepherdsville Rds. The district annexed with Ovid in March, 1964. The next door neighbor bought the school. It was not changed or remodeled, but was used for storage and a workshop until 2001. The daughter of the owner planned to turn it into an antique, gift & floral shop along with interior dedicated to a display of one-room schoolhouse education, life and memorabilia. Very little is know about this school. As a settlement it predates Leota by at least 20 years. An 1899 map shows a school located in S/12 about 1/2 mile from Jonesville. That school was most likely the Jonesville School. Jonesville received its name from a prominent citizen, George Jones. In 1877 the post office was called Upton. This name was sometimes used for the school. Jonesville was located where it was because it was on the Muskegon River and a major north-south road named Old State Rd that went from from Ionia to Houghton Lake and right thru Jonesville. Jonesville is the oldest Village in Hillsdale County from 1828. The first school was opened at Jonesville in the fall of 1832 in a room at the Benaiah Jones Tavern. The next year in 1833 a log structure known as the Bell House on Evans St was opened with Benjamin Baxter as teacher. He was 17 years old. The following year another log structure was built on the present site of the Episcopal church. One year later a frame building was built SE of the log school. In 1857 the first two-story brick school was erected and opened. A larger school needed to be built and a three-story school was built at a cost of $11,000. Listing in 1921-22 Hillsdale County School Directory as Jonesville #1 with an enrollment of 284 and 12 faculty teaching K-12. In 1923 the three-story school burned-down but was replaced. In 1946 the Jonesville District joined with 12 rural districts to form a Rural Agricultural School District. Since then five other primary districts have joined the district now known as the Jonesville Community School District. In the early 1920's that building was torn-down and a new four-room brick school was built. In 1924, 4 more rooms added and in 1927, 8 more rooms and a gym were added. In 1936 it was a H.S. When the area was organizing for a school they often put up a crude log building or held school at someone's residence. As funds became available they were improved with maps, dictionaries, and library books. In the 1930's electricity, an oil furnace, and modern plumbing were added. It was closed in 1960. A lot was purchased from Jacob Kandell for $15. William H. Wood secured the contract for erecting the school building at a cost of $690. Carl Knuth was hired to put up a flag pole on the grounds and to bore a well. Would not be provided with a stone foundation until James Hubble was hired to build it in 1940. A small frame building was built in 1882. A larger school was built in 1892. In 1890 there were about 60 students enrolled. The school had chemical toilets, a wood and coal furnace along with an outside pump with one dipper. Electricity in the 1930's. It was decided in 1960 to build a two-room school between Kerby and Shipman Rds. In 1963 it was annexed to Corunna. It had been called both Kerby or Thompson. The school of 1892 is still standing and is used by the Kerby School Arts Club of Owosso. Echoes of Yesteryears v. 2 p. 38

Kimball Lake was originally a log school called Ward's School. The district re-organized in 1881 and the name changed to Kimball Lake and a new schoolhouse was built about 1889. In 1943 the school closed and officially consolidated with Fremont and Newaygo Schools in 1957. Students living W of Ferris went to Fremont and those living E of Ferris went to Newaygo. Then in May 1966 the school burned to the ground. It was in the process of being remodeled into a residence. It is thought that a cigarette was dropped and started some rags on fire
