The school was well built and fully equipped. History of Plainfield Township p. 3. In 1901 the Hale School was moved into the Village of Hale. From 1901-1908 it was a one-room, one teacher school. In 1908 two-rooms were to be added, but the 2nd room was not completed until 1910. In 1911, the first 10th graders graduated. Students only attended until 10th grade until 1942. It was on a one-acre site purchased in 1882 for $25.00. The first wooden-frame school burned. The second school was built of red brick. The school closed in 1965 annexing to Newaygo. The Township used the school for the Township Hall for many years until it required more space. In 2001 a Historical Committee decided to work on restoring the schoolhouse to its old-time educational looks |

The school burned-down on Halloween night 1925. There was a new school in 1926 with Mrs. Gladys (Killicut) Thompson as the first teacher. Due to low enrollment, and therefore being closed for two years, Gladden merged with Gunnisonville School on October 7, 1958. This replaced an earlier building located to the S. A bell was purchased in 1889 at a cost of $15.00, a substantial sum considering that the teacher's monthly wage then was $30.00. The school was originally known as the Underwood School but in later years was called the Gormer School as it was part of the Gormer settlement at that crossroads. District #2 annexed to the Marion Township Unit School in June, 1961. Prior to this the district had been sending its 7th and 8th graders to Marion. Also in 1896 the village had constructed a West Ward School for that end of town. After paying the last payment on Central School on Dec. 21, 1920 the school burned, but was covered by insurance. The students were on Christmas break. A new modern school was built with an auditorium, gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. This school was named after William G. Mather. A new Munising High School was built on the shore of Lake Superior in 1980 at a cost of 5 million dollars |

The Grandon School burned-down on Feb 8, 1912 caused by a defective chimney. That fall a contract was let to build a new cobblestone schoolhouse which still stands on that site. In 1950 the 4 schools of Winterfield Township decided to become one district. An addition was built on the Grandon School to accommodate all the students of the district that was named the Winterfield Primary School. A new bus was purchased. The 7th and 8th graders were transported to Marion. Most of the students in High School would walk to the Osceola County Line and ride the bus to Marion.
