A bell was purchased in 1889 at a cost of $15.00, a substantial sum considering that the teacher's monthly wage then was $30.00. The school was originally known as the Underwood School but in later years was called the Gormer School as it was part of the Gormer settlement at that crossroads. District #2 annexed to the Marion Township Unit School in June, 1961. Prior to this the district had been sending its 7th and 8th graders to Marion. In 1896 the Village of Munising needed a building to serve grades K-12. This building first called Central and later Froebel School, was completed Jan 1, 1897. It was a two-story frame building with a basement. Also in 1896 the village had constructed a West Ward School for that end of town. After paying the last payment on Central School on Dec. 21, 1920 the school burned, but was covered by insurance. The students were on Christmas break. A new modern school was built with an auditorium, gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. This school was named after William G. Mather. In 1891 the land for Grandon, #2 (photo p. 130) was purchased from John H. Fleming. The Grandon School burned-down on Feb 8, 1912 caused by a defective chimney. That fall a contract was let to build a new cobblestone schoolhouse which still stands on that site. In 1950 the 4 schools of Winterfield Township decided to become one district. An addition was built on the Grandon School to accommodate all the students of the district that was named the Winterfield Primary School. A new bus was purchased. The 7th and 8th graders were transported to Marion. Most of the students in High School would walk to the Osceola County Line and ride the bus to Marion. On June 1, 1964 the voters of Winterfield Township voted to annex to the Marion School. Marion, Moving Ahead p. 132. A list of Grandon teachers starts on p. 327 of Clare County Historical Schools
