Possibly named after Charles Ott. Also called the Cunningham School. In 1887 a new larger schoolhouse in district No 4 was built. The old school closed and went up for sale in November of 1928. Before the original Ott School was there it was the Cunningham School. It was located at the SE corner of Monroe Rd & Eberhart Ave. About 1899 the Clare Sentinel 8-18-1899 stated that the Old Cunningham School was no longer standing. So it seemed to be closed by 1899. A list of Ott and Cunningham teachers starts on page 214 of Clare County School Houses book

Only the bell was transferred to the new building. It taught grades 1-8. In September of 1920 the name of the school was changed from Skate or Ammond to Daniel Whitfield School. A 3rd larger school was completed in 1927 and it had 7 classrooms and an office. In 1929 a library, music room and gym were added. Approximately 180 pupils were enrolled when in 1947 it annexed to Pontiac Schools. The building was still used as an Elementary School and in June, 1959 the enrollment was 715 students. The school was closed in 1991 because of budget problems with Pontiac Schools (internet)
