In 1884 the first school was built. It was also known as Lamotte Township #6 when it was a country school. Two years later in 1886 it burned-down. Later that year a frame school was built at a site called the Indian Sugar Bush. It had grades 1-8. The present building was erected in 1915. When most of the county schools consolidated about 1945, the Brown School consolidated to Marlette and it was moved to Marlette where it was placed on the grounds next to the High School. It became known as the Kindergarten Cottage. In 1986 it was part of the Brown City Community Schools.? Designated a Michigan Historical Site. Traveling thru Time p. 405

In 1909 there were 200 books in the library. In February of 1915 Brown School burned to the ground. It appears that the replacement school was made of cobblestone. It was announced in 1933 that the new school is in No. 1 condition and will soon be designated a Standard School. In 1933 there was a vote to annex to Clare Schools but it failed. The school continued until 1956 when it was annexed to Clare. A list of teachers starts on page 207 of Clare County School Houses.
