In 1896 the Village of Munising needed a building to serve grades K-12. This building first called Central and later Froebel School, was completed Jan 1, 1897. It was a two-story frame building with a basement. Also in 1896 the village had constructed a West Ward School for that end of town. After paying the last payment on Central School on Dec. 21, 1920 the school burned, but was covered by insurance. The students were on Christmas break. A new modern school was built with an auditorium, gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. This school was named after William G. Mather. A new Munising High School was built on the shore of Lake Superior in 1980 at a cost of 5 million dollars

In 1933 the 7th and 8th graders were bused to Munising. One teacher then taught the remaining 6 grades. Then those grades were divided into two sections, with that arrangement lasting until 1952 when grades 5th and 6th were also transferred to Munising. Annexed in 1961.
